Australia Mother’s Day

Unlike other holidays like Christmas or ANZAC Day, Australia Mother’s Day is not a public holiday. However, it is a celebrated occasion to honor mothers and mother figures. Australians celebrate this special day with family gatherings and gift-giving.

In Australia, this day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May each year. The tradition of giving gifts on this day was started by Janet Heyden in 1924. She started visiting patients in the Newinton State Home for Women in Leichhardt Sydney to give gifts to lonely mothers. This started the tradition of presenting gifts on Mother’s day. This was later adopted by Anna Jarvis, who campaigned for an official Mother?s Day in the United States in 1908 after she lost her mother. The holiday she created has since become a global celebration.

Australia Mother’s Day Traditions and Gift Ideas

While the concept of this day is similar to other countries, there are some key differences that set Australia apart from others. One of the main differences is that this day is devoted to mothers and mother figures, not just biological ones. This includes stepmothers, grandmothers, aunts, close female friends and even foster mothers. This means that more people are celebrated on this day than would be seen in the United States.

Another difference is that Australians tend to focus more on the importance of spending time with their families. This can be seen in activities like having a picnic at the beach or enjoying a barbecue with family and friends. Foods like morning tea and desserts featuring traditional Australian recipes are also enjoyed.
