The Rise of Female Gamers in the Online Gaming World

Once thought of as a male-dominated industry, gaming has seen the fastest growth among any global digital sector. However, despite this massive growth in the industry, women are still struggling to find their place and have yet to break through the perception that video games have a toxic male culture. This is largely due to a lack of targeted outreach for female gamers, as well as the prevalence of sexist, misogynistic or otherwise derogatory content leveled at women who play or stream their gameplay.

This has led to a reshaping of the gaming world with female gamers becoming increasingly visible from competitive esports to indie game designers. Moreover, the gaming industry has shifted from intense violence and competition to more narratively driven experiences with a focus on community and creativity.

The Rise of Female Gamers in the Online Gaming World

We interviewed a cross-section of gamers to get their perspective on this shift in the gaming world. Specifically, we asked participants about the games they played, how much time they spent playing them, their favorite genres and if they felt any negative impact from their gaming habits on their real-life lives. Participants were recruited through a Reddit recruitment post which allowed us to engage with gamers in their own environments and collect data quickly. However, the use of Reddit limits the overall diversity of our sample as it only focuses on gamers who were willing to participate in an interview. The use of non-visual interview methods also limits the ability to build rapport with participants and interpret their non-verbal cues.
